Police news: Crowd broken up with pepper spray

March 20, 2008

Maple Heights -- Police used pepper spray to break up a crowd of about 100 juveniles that had gathered near the intersection of Mapleboro Avenue and Beechwood Avenue March 13 at around 3:15 p.m. No one was arrested.

According to police, the crowd may have gathered because of a fight. It grew to 50, then 100, as an officer ordered the crowd to leave. However, according to the report, the officer did not witness a fight.

As the crowd continued to grow, the officer fired pepper spray over the heads of the crowd to disperse it, a report stated. The crowd broke up without further incident, and there were no injuries reported, police said.

Criminal mischief

March 13. Vandalous van Goghs: A James Street resident told police that a group of juveniles were "spilling paint onto the road" shortly after 3:30 p.m. They were gone when police arrived. However, police said the paint, which was not identified by type, seemed to have been poured onto the road.

Police reported no one was sent to clean it up because they expected the paint to wash off in the rain.

When she checked for her credit card, she said it was gone from her purse. The woman said she did not know when the card was taken.

The woman said bank officials advised her to file a police report before they would investigate.
