Maple Heights -- Three people will be vying for two spots in the March 4 primary to see who goes on to serve with County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora.
Democrat and current commissioner Peter Lawson Jones' seat expires Jan. 1, 2009. The term of Tim Hagan, also a Democrat and current commissioner, expires Jan. 2, 2009.
Joining Jones and Hagan in the primary will be Republican hopeful Deborah L. Sutherland.
Jones is president of the Board of County Commissioners and was elected in 2002. He is president of the Cuyahoga County Arts and Cultural District, vice chairman of the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District and a member of the executive committee of the Northeast Ohio Area Wide Coordinating Agency.
Jones also served 2 1/2 terms in the Ohio House of Representatives, is a member of the House Finance and Appropriations Committee and second vice president of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus. He is a partner with the law firm of Roetzel and Andress and was a former mayor and a Councilor in Shaker Heights.
Hagan was elected in 2005 and had previously served 14 years as commissioner. He is a member of the County Planning Commission, District One Public Works Integrating Committee and United Way, and is secretary for the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District.
He is currently the co-chair of Invest in Children, formerly known as the Early Childhood Initiative.
