Macedonia may get new grocer: Wal-Mart proposes expansion for 'supercenter' in Commons

Macedonia -- There's a new grocery store coming to town, if Mayor Don Kuchta, head of the city planning commission, has his way.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. wants to expand its current store in the Macedonia Commons Shopping Center into a Wal-Mart Supercenter.
The plan, submitted to the Macedonia Planning Commission Nov 14, calls for a 46,000-square-foot expansion of the 121,000-square-foot store, including an entire supermarket and additional clothing, cosmetics and household items. The store's inventory would be expanded from around 120,000 to 142,000 items, said Jason Wetzel, spokesperson for Wal-Mart's Ohio and Indiana region.
"I'm ecstatic," Kuchta said Nov. 17. "It's another grocery store. It's one of the most asked for things in Macedonia."
Kuchta said he has been unsuccessful in attracting another grocer to the city since the Tops in Macedonia Commons closed in December 2006.
Kuchta expects Wal-Mart's plan will receive swift approval when the planning commission meets Nov. 24.
"I would take a shovel and help them start digging," Kuchta said.
Wetzel said the chain's typical supercenter employs around 300 people, depending on the time of year, but didn't have figures for how many employees presently work at the Macedonia store.
Wetzel said a timeline for the expansion is not available.
"Our goal is to expand the store," he said. "We're in the very early stages of this."
Calls made to the shopping center's owner, Beachwood-based Developer Diversified Realty, were not returned. The 54,000-square-foot former Tops location is listed on DDR's Web site as being available.
