On Sept. 16, the Macedonia Fire Department hosted training for its firefighters and for members of the Boston Heights Fire Department on the basics of companion animal care. The training was put on by Erin Redman CVT, technical staff manager and senior technician with the Macedonia Veterinary Clinic. Shaun McWilliams, executive director of the Akron Veterinary Referral and Emergency Centers, and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rod Ferguson, discussed inhaled toxins and emergency care for working dogs. This clinic was the first of its kind in the area. The idea came after area fire departments all received donations of oxygen masks to treat pets exposed to hazardous atmospheres. Training sessions such as this are conducted whenever the department receives new equipment. The masks were donated by Dr. Robert Wickes, a veterinarian with the Macedonia Veterinary Clinic. Comments
