Maple Heights -- To go along with five new schools slated for construction the next few years, the high school gymnasium will soon get a facelift.

The Board of Education gave a nod April 15 to $2 million in improvements at Wylie Athletic Center, 5500 Clement Drive, which will replace the 25-year-old domed roof above the pool, the roof over the locker rooms and the building's heating and air conditioning unit, said Treasurer Christopher Krause.

Krause said the money is coming from a loan borrowed against the money from Issue 9, a permanent improvement levy that was passed by voters in November.

The levy is scheduled to bring in about $463,000 this year.

"Construction will begin the second week of June and will all be finished by the time school starts," Krause added.

Krause also said a portion of the brick facade on the outside of the building will be replaced.

"Every year we try to make improvements in the district," Superintendent Charlie Keenan said April 25.

"The athletic center is the only facility we have to invest money into because the other buildings will soon be replaced," he said.

Five new schools will be built, thanks to the March passage of bond Issue 5, which will raise $53.4 million of the $109 million needed to build the five schools.

The remaining $55.6 million will be funded by the state, via a settlement in a multi-state lawsuit with tobacco companies.

A new high school, middle school and three elementary schools will be built.

Keenan said spending the money on the athletic center is a sound decision.

"And it is money well spent to insure we have the life of the building extended," he said.
